buy and rent books
Today, students have many options for getting their books. They can buy new, buy used, rent new or used, or in some cases, buy or rent e-books. So before you write that check or swipe your plastic, here are some questions to consider.
I most definitely agree with Kristy. The only time to go to B&N @ BU is when professors require a book or multiple books that are only sold in B&N. Most of the time, it turns out to be books made specifically for the BU course, and other times it would be a few books that they have written (not to mention it may not be used at any other university). These books are massively overpriced. It is only when the student does not know any better, is too lazy to look elsewhere or has the money to not care about the cost that they will head to B&N.
It is nice to see that students have unlimited options to get their textbooks or course material. However most students are not aware of free price comparison websites like affordtextbooks that finds the cheapest used, rental, ebook or even international edition. If you prefer to pick up your order in your campus bookstore, please wait for an email confirmation indicating that your order is ready before coming to the store. This will allow us to promote social distancing and to minimize the wait times in the store.
Buy/Rent/Compare Go directly to BeachBookCompare.com, select your classes, select your textbooks, compare prices (with the online marketplace), add to cart (whether from the Bookstore or the marketplace), and check out.
As a non-profit, the 49er Shops are dedicated to lowering the costs of course materials by acquiring cheaper formats from the traditional new book whenever available. These include sourcing as many used books as possible, working with vendors to make as many titles available as a rental, acquiring cheaper loose-leaf formats, and producing faculty course packs. Some classes may require bundles, which is a set of multiple books or a combination of a physical textbook along with a digital courseware product.
When renting a textbook, you will need to provide a CSULB student ID, as well as a credit card that does not expire before the rental due date. Whether renting in-store or through a web order you will also need to agree to our rental agreement. For information on rental returns, please visit RentalReturns.ShopThe Beach.com.
An e-book is the textbook in a digital format. It is no longer just a plain PDF. With our digital provider, RedShelf, e-books now contain features such as highlighting and notetaking. If available, e-books can be purchased on our BeachBookCompare.com website under CSULB RedShelf Digital Bookstore, or students can visit csulb.redshelf.com directly.
Once you commit to obtaining the latest editions of your books, you will have to decide whether to buy the books new, buy them used, or rent them. I had a few classmates keep every single book, but most of them were eager to discard them immediately after finals. This is up to you, but keep in mind that every case in your books can also be found on Westlaw and other legal research services, so it is highly unlikely that you will ever need to use them in your practice.
Buying the books new means you will be the first owner and the pages will be blank and ready for your highlights and notes. Some students book brief and make extensive notes in their books, but many will write out separate case briefs, leaving their books clear. How you study and process the cases best will be up to you, but if you are interested in reselling books that you bought new, keep in mind that your buyers may not want heavily notated books. If you buy the book new, you may also have access to helpful online resources (such as those in Casebook Connect), which could include an e-book version, outlining tools, and other study aids.
If you go the used book route, start early. The best deals tend to be shortly after the semester ends. Students are hungry to offload books before winter holidays, summer work, and bar prep begin. Keep a close eye on your school Facebook page and listserve, if there is one. Post the books you are seeking, and set up alerts for the books you are trying to sell. If you rent, make sure to shop around. Compare your bookstore rate with the dozens of used booksellers online.

According to a study done by CollegeBoard, a student spends roughly $1,300 a year on textbooks, regardless of whether its a four-year undergraduate program or a two-year community college degree. In fact, the average price of a new textbook increased from $57 in 2007 to $65 in 2010 and to $79 in 2013. Think about it this way: the cost of a new print textbook has climbed steadily over the decades, increasing 1,041% since 1977, while during the same period, general inflation has risen by 308%.
With the rise of ebooks and ebook readers, there are even more ways to acquire a class textbook. While the marginal cost of producing an additional physical copy of a book is expensive, people expected ebooks to reduce the cost of books. Despite these predictions, ebook prices are generally only a bit lower than a physical book. This is despite the marginal cost of selling an extra book running at cents, essentially just enough to cover the server cost. Where are the $10-25 textbooks?
One of the best ways to get the best chance for lowest prices is to order online and early. Skip the lines at the bookstore and order your books online for store pickup for free. We retrieve, pack, and hold your books until you're back on campus. Shop online now.
You can still return your books after the first week of class, but now you will need to show proof that you dropped or changed classes. The book must also be in original condition. This includes access codes.
Often students ask why one book is rentable and another is not. Rentals are only available for non-custom books. If your professor customizes his/her book, we cannot rent it because it cannot be used in a following semester.
California State Polytechnic University, Pomona students, purchase or rent your NEW/USED digital textbooks from Bronco Bookstore or BroncoBookstore.com. At Bronco Bookstore we strive to ensure we provide the exact materials selected by your course faculty at fair and competitive prices.
The Bookstore Charging Program is a new service that will allow students who are eligible for financial aid to charge the cost of course materials purchases/rentals at Bronco Bookstore to their CPP student accounts against pending financial aid disbursements. This is not a grant or additional aid award, but an advance on your aid package. Eligible purchases can be made with your Bronco ID card.
Currently enrolled CPP (regular university only, not Extended University) students registered in greater than zero units who have been awarded financial aid that has not yet been disbursed may choose to use this program.
Student charges at the Bookstore for authorized purchases will be added to the student's CPP account at the time of check-out. In-store purchases will require a signature indicating agreement with program terms. Online orders need to state agreement with the terms in the special instructions field. Account balances are paid when financial aid funds are disbursed. Students are responsible for paying any balance on their student account that remains after aid disbursement. PLEASE NOTE that the student's financial aid package must exceed their financial obligation to the university for the current semester in order to qualify for the book charging program.
The outstanding balance for Bookstore purchases in a current semester must be paid before a student can access this process in a future semester. A hold will be placed on the student account for unpaid balances, preventing class enrollment in the following semester. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES:
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, between 2006 and 2016, the price of textbooks used in college rose 88%. Unfortunately, students need textbooks to help them learn subjects, even though some of them are expensive.
