What is Narayan Bali Puja?
Narayan Bali Puja means Narayan (Lord Vishnu/Krishna) Bali (offerings) puja (prayers). So this prayer is to appease Lord Narayana for an unnatural death. The 40th chapter of the Garuda Purana is dedicated to the Narayan Bali Rites. Lord Vishnu (a.k.a Lords Narayana/Krishna) is the presiding deity of this ritual, as he is the lord of liberation and salvation.
Narayan Bali Puja is similar to the Hindu funeral rites, but it uses a symbolic body made of wheat flour instead of a real corpse. The priest invokes the souls of the ancestors who have unfulfilled desires and invites them to enter the artificial body. Then, he performs the final rites for them and sets them free from their bondage.
Narayan Bali Puja also includes Nag Bali Puja, which is done to remove the sin of killing a snake, especially a cobra, which is worshipped in India. In this ritual, a snake made of wheat flour is also cremated along with the symbolic body.
Why is Narayan Bali Puja done?
Narayan Bali Puja is done for various reasons, such as:
To get rid of the problems caused by the unsatisfied souls of the ancestors who have died an unnatural death.
To have children and progeny.
To overcome financial losses, business failures, health issues, family disputes, educational obstacles, marital problems, etc.
To remove the curse of killing a snake or any other animal.
To attain peace, happiness, prosperity, and spiritual growth.
The scriptures mention that this ritual should be done only at Trimbakeshwar Temple in Nashik, Maharashtra. We can find references to this tradition in the Skanda Purana and the Padma Purana. Narayan Bali Puja is classified as Kamya, which means it is done to fulfill certain desires.
How is Narayan Bali Puja done?
Narayan Bali Puja is a three-day ritual that requires a proper place to stay and a priest to perform it. The ritual may require more than one priest depending on the number of ancestors to be liberated. The cost of performing this ritual may vary from Rs. 7000 to Rs. 8000. The person should bring new clothes for himself and his family members. The hotel room rent may start from Rs. 500 per day. The food per plate may cost Rs. 100.
The procedure of Narayan Bali Puja is as follows:
On the first day, the person takes a bath in the holy river Godavari and wears new clothes. He then goes to the temple and worships Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, and Goddess Parvati. He also performs Rudra Abhishek (a ritual of pouring water or milk on a Shiva Linga) and offers Bilva leaves (a sacred leaf used in Shiva worship).
He then meets the priest who will perform the ritual for him. He gives his details such as name, gotra (clan), nakshatra (birth star), etc. He also tells the names and details of his ancestors who have died an unnatural death.
The priest then prepares a symbolic body and a snake made of wheat flour. He also arranges a fire pit, a wooden stretcher, and other items required for the ritual.
He then chants mantras and invokes the souls of the ancestors and requests them to enter the artificial body and the snake. He also asks them to forgive their descendants for any mistakes or sins they have committed.
He then performs the final rites for the symbolic body and the snake. He places them on the wooden stretcher and carries them to the fire pit. He sets them on fire and offers ghee (clarified butter) and sesame seeds to the flames. He also recites the names of the ancestors and prays for their liberation.
He then collects the ashes and bones from the fire pit and immerses them in the river Godavari. He also performs Tarpan (a ritual of offering water to the ancestors) and Pind Daan (a ritual of offering rice balls to the ancestors).
On the second day, he repeats the same procedure for another set of ancestors who have died an unnatural death.
On the third day, he performs a Havan (a fire ritual) and offers various items such as fruits, flowers, grains, etc. to Lord Vishnu. He also chants the Vishnu Sahasranama (a hymn of 1000 names of Lord Vishnu) and asks for his blessings.
He then performs a Satyanarayan Puja (a ritual of worshipping Lord Vishnu as the embodiment of truth) and listens to the Satyanarayan Katha (a story of Lord Vishnu's grace). He also distributes Prasad (sacred food) to the priest and other devotees.
He then thanks the priest for his services and gives him Dakshina (a fee or a donation). He also takes his blessings and leaves the temple.
